Have You Ever Felt Like Someone Crossed the Line?
We’ve all been there—someone says or does something that oversteps personal boundaries and leaves us feeling hurt or disrespected. Understanding what it means to cross the line is essential for protecting yourself and maintaining healthy relationships.
What Is “Purview” and Why Does It Matter?
The word “purview” refers to the scope, extent, or limits of authority—essentially, the rules that define what’s acceptable in different situations. According to YourDictionary.com, purview is used in legal, social, and personal contexts to set boundaries that prevent people from taking advantage of others.
Think of purview as a safety net that ensures fair treatment and protects people from being mistreated, manipulated, or taken for granted. When someone goes beyond their purview, they’re violating boundaries—whether in a workplace, friendship, relationship, or any other area of life.
What Happens When Someone Crosses the Line?
When a person goes beyond their role, disrespects your space, or mistreats you, it’s called a transgression—meaning they’ve stepped outside of what’s allowed or appropriate. For example:
• In real estate law, when you own property, you have the right to keep others off your land unless you grant them permission. If someone trespasses, they’ve violated your rights.
• In relationships, when someone disrespects your emotions, ignores your boundaries, or takes advantage of your kindness, they’ve trespassed on your feelings—crossing an invisible but important line.
Recognizing When Someone Is “Riding Roughshod” Over You
The phrase “riding roughshod” means acting without regard for others, crushing them with words or actions, or overstepping authority. If someone has treated you unfairly, ignored your boundaries, or dismissed your feelings, they may be riding roughshod over you.
But you don’t have to accept mistreatment. The Bible encourages people to stand up for themselves while also seeking wisdom and peace. For example:
• David confronted King Saul when Saul tried to harm him.
• Paul stood up against religious and political leaders who treated him unjustly.
How to Respond When Someone Oversteps
If you feel disrespected or mistreated, consider these steps:
1. Pray for Wisdom – Ask God for guidance in how to handle the situation.
2. Communicate Clearly – If possible, talk to the person who wronged you and express how their actions affected you.
3. Set Firm Boundaries – Make it clear what is and isn’t acceptable in your interactions.
4. Seek Justice When Necessary – In serious cases, like legal or workplace violations, don’t be afraid to seek help or take action.
5. Choose Growth Over Resentment – Holding onto bitterness only hurts you; focus on healing and moving forward.
Final Thoughts
You don’t have to tolerate mistreatment. Whether someone crosses the line emotionally, professionally, or spiritually, you have the right to stand up for yourself while maintaining grace and wisdom. Trust God to guide you in handling difficult situations, and never be afraid to protect your peace and well-being.
