Heart of Writing S1E5 Starting Small, Staying Steady

Success in writing doesn’t happen overnight. In this episode of Writing from the Heart, John Edward Nickerson reminds us that starting small doesn’t mean we’re invisible, and staying steady is what builds lasting trust.

Through personal stories from his own 14-year writing journey, John shares why consistency matters more than flashy upgrades or giant platforms. You’ll discover encouragement to take one small, sustainable step at a time—and why those steps create momentum that lasts.

Good morning, and welcome to another episode of Writing from the Heart.

Today, we’re going to talk about the challenge of balancing our writing with the rest of our lives.

Sometimes, as writers, we don’t always get the time we want to spend on our craft.

Even if you’re a full-time writer—running your own website, reaching people with your voice and vision—there are still plenty of responsibilities waiting for you each day.

For me, it’s caregiving for older family members.

It’s taking care of my home.

And it’s tending to my health with daily fitness routines.

If you’re trying to balance writing with family responsibilities, you’re not alone.

As authors, we carry a unique calling: to touch people with our words, to make a difference in their lives.

But we also need to remember—be kind to yourself, so you don’t burn out.

Think about a light bulb.

It’s easy to enjoy the light it produces.

But most people don’t notice the light bulb is burning out—until it’s too late, and they’re standing in the dark.

Don’t let yourself burn out.

Protect your energy.

Create a routine that takes care of you—just as much as you care for others.

Remember: you are precious.

Your voice, your vision, your story—they deserve to be protected.

Scripture tells us to let our light shine before others.

But in order to shine, we must also make sure we don’t burn out.

So today—give yourself extra time to get ready for work.

Make your favorite coffee or your favorite tea.

And when you do, pause.

Breathe.

Be present.

Notice the taste.

Notice the warmth as you drink it.

Let it comfort you.

Don’t rush this moment.

Let it breathe.

Just be.

Your body and your mind will thank you for the reset.

Until next time, this is John Edward Nickerson, reminding you:

Be at peace.

Keep showing yourself kindness and compassion.

If this episode helped you, I’d love if you shared it with someone else who needs encouragement today.

Thank you for joining me.
