She thought the little girl was just lost. Then she discovered something terrifying was hunting her.
Hanna finds a ten-year-old girl walking alone along a dark stretch of road.
Her name is Joy.
She has no parents with her. No explanation for why she is there. Hanna takes her home, believing she is helping a child who needs somewhere safe to stay.
Then the fog comes to Miller’s Point.
It spreads through the town, and people caught in it are attacked by something moving inside the mist. Hanna watches the town unravel around her as the fog moves with a purpose she cannot understand.
It is looking for Joy.
As Hanna tries to protect her, Joy begins to reveal pieces of the truth. She came into the human world because she wanted something she had only watched from the outside.
A real life.
A home.
A white door.
She wanted to be human.
But something inside the fog knows she doesn’t belong.
It follows Joy. It surrounds the places where she hides. And when Hanna refuses to give Joy up, the fog turns its attention toward her too.
Hanna doesn’t know what Joy is.
She doesn’t know where she came from.
She doesn’t know what waits inside the fog.
She only knows that Joy is a child who wants a real home—and that something has come to take her away.
Hanna isn’t willing to let her go.
